A co-founder of Red Rock Hockey and volunteer with Kids On Ice, he has been involved in growing the sport locally for over 10 years. Most recently he was named Captain of the St. George Sting, one of two local NBHL teams competing in the Mountain West division. Tommy Rupp: Expert Hockey Instructor and Lifelong Hockey Enthusiast
Tommy Rupp is a seasoned hockey veteran and dedicated instructor with over three decades of experience across ice, roller, and ball hockey. As a Director and board member of Red Rock Hockey since its inception, Tommy has been instrumental in helping build and expand hockey programs in southern Utah, fostering a passion for the sport among players of all ages and skill levels. His journey from a young prodigy on the ice to a respected coach and leader exemplifies his deep-rooted commitment to hockey's growth and excellence.
Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Tommy's love affair with hockey began early. From ages 8 to 17, he honed his skills in competitive AA and AAA travel ice hockey, competing at high-stakes tournaments that built his foundation as a versatile and strategic player. During his high school years, he captained the Murray Spartans ice hockey team, leading them to impressive finishes, including a second-place standing in the state championships. Tommy's talents extended beyond the rink; in 2005, at just 15 years old, he guided the Murray Spartans to a high school roller hockey national championship and earned MVP honors for his standout performance in the high school nationals.
After graduating high school, Tommy's prowess earned him a contract to play Junior A hockey with the Queen City Steam in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the Central States Hockey League. Over two seasons, he served as assistant captain and etched his name in franchise history by ranking in the top five all-time in overall points. Returning to Utah, he was selected as captain of the Utah County Blizzard Senior A team, where he continued to excel before joining the Park City Pioneers for two additional years of senior-level play.
In 2015, Tommy relocated to southern Utah and discovered a nascent local ball hockey program. Eager to give back, he immersed himself as a volunteer, coach, referee, board member, and eventually Director. His involvement helped propel the program's inaugural season and beyond. By 2023, Tommy had joined the Sin City Biohazard NBHL team as a player while taking on the role of General Manager for the NBHL Women's Elite Angels. Under his leadership, the Angels secured a thrilling second-place finish at the National Championships, falling just short in overtime. Tommy currently serves as the captain of the Utah Outcasts tier 3 mountain west division in the NBHL.
Throughout his illustrious career, Tommy has been mentored by elite figures in the hockey world, including Darryl Olsen of the Calgary Flames, Rikard Gronborg (World Junior Championship U20 Gold Medal coach), and Don Biggs, who played for the Minnesota North Stars and Philadelphia Flyers. These experiences at the highest levels have shaped Tommy's coaching philosophy, emphasizing discipline, technique, and mental fortitude.
Today, Tommy specializes in elevating players through tailored instruction, drawing on his extensive background to offer:
